2 Million Reasons to Care About Rural Public Health in Michigan

Living in a rural community in Michigan offers unique experiences, from exploring densely forested hiking trails to enjoying the vibrant fall colors and miles of freshwater shoreline. These are just a few of the wonderful experiences that make up being a Michigander or a Yooper if you are from the Upper Peninsula (U.P.). However, rural living also presents distinct challenges, particularly in the realm of health care.

Workforce Development Workshops

The MSU Master of Public Health program Workforce Development Committee is charged with helping to meet the professional development needs of the public health workforce in Greater Flint and surrounding areas. 

It holds free, bimonthly virtual workshops on topics relevant to public health organizations on Friday mornings.

The Epsilon Pi Chapter of the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health at Michigan State University is pleased to announce the College of Human Medicine’s spring 2025 inductees. Each year, Delta Omega elects new students, faculty, alumni, and honorary members based on high academic standards and outstanding performance in scholarship, teaching, research, and community service. 2025 Flint Spartan Master of Public Health Scholarship

The Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health is supporting the public health workforce in the Flint community with a third Flint Spartan Master of Public Health Scholarship. One scholarship will be awarded in fall 2025 and will cover tuition and fees for completing MSU's online Master of Public Health. Prospective students who currently live or work in the greater Flint community, including Mt. Morris and Burton are eligible.

The Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health is unique as the first academic Department to be co-developed and co-governed in partnership with the communities it serves. As Michigan State University's first fully philanthropically named Department, expansion efforts include recruiting top talent. With more than $186 million in federal research grants and other funding to date, this community-partnered public health department has been an economic engine for Flint while improving health outcomes and influencing health policy.

College of Human Medicine Receives State Funding for Academic and Community Programming

Michigan State University is receiving $32.225 million in state funding for eight projects and programming, three of which are College of Human Medicine initiatives.

10 Years Later...MSU Experts are Available to Comment on What's Next for Flint

Michigan State University has a long-standing relationship with the city of Flint, Michigan. MSU Extension has been working with people in Genesee County for more than 100 years and continues to offer programs to help residents thrive. MSU Medical students have been studying, volunteering and working in the community since 1971. Over 300 students from the colleges of Human Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine and Nursing are engaged in Flint, along with faculty, staff and researchers.
