Are you interested in cross-disciplinary work in public health? Consider dual enrollment.

  • Graduate or professional students can share up to 9 credits between the MPH and another MSU graduate or professional program.
  • Undergraduate students can share up to 9 credits from the MPH with their undergrad program.

Students interested in pursuing dual enrollment must apply to and be admitted to each of the programs separately. An MPH student’s status may change to that of a dually enrolled student after they receive admission to another MSU graduate or professional degree program. It is the responsibility of the MPH student to notify the Master of Public Health program office and their MPH advisor regarding acceptance into a second graduate program.

Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) and Medical Doctor (MD)

Physicians are educated and trained on how to diagnose and treat human disease. Public health professionals assess factors affecting health, critique and apply research findings and, in turn, develop strategies and implement various measures to promote health and prevent disease.

Thus, integrated education and training toward the DO and MPH degrees or MD and MPH degrees complement and enhance each other and provide health care professionals with a greater understanding of the broader context of population health issues and better tools to understand and prevent human diseases.

Students interested in dual enrollment must apply to the College of Human Medicine (CHM) or the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) AND submit an application for graduate study for the Master of Public Health. A description of the application process can be found on our Application Information page. We highly recommend prospective applicants review the application requirements prior to starting the application. Each applicant is evaluated independently by both CHM or COM and the Master of Public Health admissions committees.

Students interested in learning more may contact the MPH academic office at (810) 600-5601 or CHM.MPH_GenInfo@msu.edu

Doctor of Osteopathy

If accepted by the medical college and the MPH, the student has two options for dual enrollment. Option A is highly recommended over Option B.

- Option A: complete the MPH coursework prior to beginning medical school, delaying matriculation by one year.

- Option B: complete two years of medical school followed by a gap year from medical school to complete the MPH coursework prior to resuming medical school studies.  These students will complete the Culminating Experience portion of their MPH coursework using an elective clerkship at the end of their COM studies.

With either option, students work with their COM advisor and their MPH advisor to develop a curriculum plan that supports their studies in both areas.

Please see sample curriculum plans below. Please note: these are just examples. Actual curriculum plans may vary.

Medical Doctor

If accepted by the medical college, students are allowed to dual-count five credits of HM 552 and four credits of HM 553 to satisfy nine of the twelve-credit elective requirement for the MPH. Students have two options for completing their MPH coursework. Due to the rigor and timeline of the Shared Discovery Curriculum, students who have been admitted to the MD program under the Shared Discovery Curriculum are STRONGLY encouraged to complete their MPH coursework in accordance with option A.

-Option A: complete the MPH coursework in the four semesters prior to beginning medical school (summer, fall, spring, summer), delaying matriculation by one year.

-Option B: take nine credits of MPH coursework the summer prior to beginning medical school, then complete two years of the Shared Discovery Curriculum followed by a gap year to complete MPH coursework.

*The MPH program understands that it may not be possible for a student to take nine credits prior to beginning medical school; a student should contact the parties below to discuss which curriculum plan best suits their needs.

It is highly recommended that MD students interested in dual enrollment with the MPH speak with Carol Parker, PhD, MPH (Executive Director of Academic Affairs with the College of Human Medicine) as well as Twynette Mixon (MPH Advisor) prior to deciding to pursue dual enrollment with the MPH.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)

The MPH degree is the preferred degree for those interested in working in local, state, federal and international public health agencies such as the Michigan Department of Community Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, the World Health Organization, and United States Department of Agriculture. Students interested in public health are usually active in the MSU One Health initiative, which is a very active and supportive learning cohort of students with a deep interest in public health.

Most dually enrolled students take MPH courses during the summers after their first and second years of veterinary school. However, it is a great idea to start taking MPH courses in the summer before veterinary school, which generally means that both the DVM and MPH degrees can be completed at about the same time. Students will want to have their required MPH courses completed before they enter their last year and a half of veterinary school. This will allow them to take a clerkship that will meet requirements for their DVM program as well as their MPH practicum requirement.

A student who wants to start taking MPH courses the summer before veterinary school will need to apply immediately to the MPH program after being accepted to the DVM program, because the application deadline for the MPH program is the end of February.

- Option A: Start the MPH in the summer semester prior to the start of the DVM program.

- Option B: Start the MPH in the summer semester after the start of the DVM program.

Please see sample curriculum plans below. Please note: these are just examples. Actual curriculum plans may vary.

Master of Social Work

Social work and public health naturally complement each other by addressing individual and community health, behavioral well-being, and addressing related social justice and advocacy concerns. A social worker aims to enhance the overall well-being and social dynamic among the members of the community. A public health background can provide social workers the opportunity to help individuals, families, and communities in a more comprehensive way than social work alone. The Master of Public Health provides a background in the various factors that affect the health of the general public by providing coursework in the foundational and core areas of public health (leadership, community engagement, health equity, biostatistics, epidemiology, administration and policy, social and behavioral aspects, and environmental aspects).

Please review the potential curriculum plans below. Please note: these are recommended curriculum plans. Actual curriculum plans may vary, and options should be discussed with advisors from both programs.

  • The courses highlighted in red are the courses that can be shared between the two programs.
  • MSW elective offerings can be found on the MSW Current Courses page.
  • MPH elective offerings can be found on the New MPH Program Requirements page.
  • Students can use one of their SW 894 experiences as their MPH practicum experience as long as it is sufficiently public health related and is approved by the MPH program.
    • Students must enroll in HM 892 the same semester as the SW 894 experience they plan to use.
    • Please note: students cannot enroll in HM 892 unless they have successfully completed all MPH core and foundational courses with a 3.0 or higher.

Master of Science in Food Safety

Students with dual MPH and MS in Food Safety degrees are well positioned to advance in careers that identify, investigate, control, and prevent contamination of the food supply. Examples of such careers include epidemiology, environmental health, laboratory science, food regulation, and quality assurance. The Online MS in Food Safety program provides working professionals with core curriculum featuring multi-disciplinary sciences while also including food law components. Elective courses allow students to tailor their program to meet their interests and career goals. The program’s courses are immediately applicable to students’ current positions while, at the same time, preparing them for future leadership roles.

Please review the potential curriculum plans below. Please note: these are recommended curriculum plans but actual curriculum plans may vary and options should be discussed with advisors from both programs. Traditional students should review the suggested traditional student dual MSFS/MPH curriculum plan.

Dual Undergraduate Enrollment

The Master of Public Health program welcomes undergraduate students eligible for dual enrollment to apply to our program. Dual enrollment provides an opportunity for academically talented undergraduate students to enroll in a maximum of nine graduate credits while completing the last two years of their bachelor's degree program. These shared credits can count toward their undergraduate degree and their graduate degree.

  • Undergraduates must have completed a minimum of 56 credits toward their undergraduate degree to be eligible for dual enrollment.
  • Undergraduates interested in dual enrollment with the Master of Public Health must complete an application and be admitted to the MPH program prior to enrolling in MPH courses.
  • Undergraduates applying to the MPH program must follow the Master of Public Health application requirements and not the dual enrollment application requirements.
    • In addition to the Master of Public Health application requirements, undergraduates must complete and submit the Request for Dual Enrollment Status form along with approval from their undergraduate advisor. Advisor approval must be submitted by the advisor directly to the Master of Public Health office at CHM.MPH_Admissions@msu.edu.

An undergraduate student may contact the MPH academic office with any questions regarding dual undergraduate enrollment.

For general information on dual enrollment by undergraduates, please visit the website of the Office of the Registrar.
