Public health informatics is defined as “the systematic application of information, computer science, and technology to public health practice, research, and learning.”  The field is relatively new with professional competencies only established in 2008.  These competencies were developed within an additional domain to supplement the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals established by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice. Students successfully completing the coursework will be well positioned to compete for the Public Health Informatics Fellowship program sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Introduction to Public Health Informatics HM 842 Introduction to Public Health Informatics (Fall)
This course provides public health students a framework for understanding the field of informatics. Informatics is three-fold comprising of computer information systems, statistics, and health practice. Public Health Informatics can improve health care by effectively using information technology within public health practices and research.
Methods in Public Health Informatics HM 843 Methods in Public Health Informatics (Fall)
This course covers theory, processes and applications of management information systems and how they relate to public health management, project management skills for information system implementation and evaluation.
Legal and Ethical Issues in Public Health Informatics HM 844 Legal/Ethical issues in Public Health Informatics (Spring)
This course details the legal and ethical considerations concerning the use of health information in public health practice and research.
Informatics and Information Technology HM 845 Informatics and Information Technology (Spring)
This course provides information technology for health informatics systems, principles of relational database systems, operations, information systems, data sets, data standards and classification systems.
Advanced Topics in Public Health Informatics Management HM 846 Advanced Topics in Public Health Informatics Management (Summer)
This course covers research, evaluation and applications of informatics in public health.
